shade tolerant berry
Jostaberry is a gooseberry-currant cross. It grows pretty vigorously and fruits heavily for us in partial shade. Even in moderately heavy shade we get high yields.
The fruit is sour even when totally ripe. It is also quite sweet and has that black currant flavor which is so delightful. I can eat a small handful ripe every day, but not everyone can. We have enough now that we need to figure out how to process it.
Jostaberry is also very easy to propagate. Simply bend a branch to the ground, put a rock over it, and pile some soil and mulch on. In a year it will have rooted and you can dig up your new plants.
